Why Phonics Works

02/08/2023

Teaching students how to read in a kindergarten, first grade, or second grade classroom is HARD.  One student still doesn't know the alphabet, another is reading chapter books, and there are 24 other students who are somewhere in between.  Add in a pile of curriculum that needs to be taught by the end of the year, and inevitably the needs of many students will be missed.  It's a common strategy in elementary schools to "teach to the middle" (the average student), but that means that some kids, especially struggling readers, will be left behind.
